Nitra Information System (NISYS) is a department within Nitra City Hall established in 1993 and comprising the city and tourist information office. It mainly provides information about cultural and historical sites, accommodations and restaurants, cultural events, sports and places to relax in the Nitra Region, train and bus connections within Slovakia, basic information and details about monuments and attractions throughout Slovakia, details about organizations and businesses in the District of Nitra and other data. All information is regularly updated by external staff for NISYS.

Other services include the sale of maps, tourist guidebooks and publications about Nitra and Slovakia, commemoratives and gifts, as well as fax and copying services.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, NISYS guarantees guides for the city and vicinity, cooperates with other information offices in Slovakia and prepares itineraries for short-term and long-term stays in Slovakia. NISYS ensures a city strategy in the area of tourism, preparing a tourism development plan in the City of Nitra.

The Information Center acts as a coordinator for working with Nitra’s partner cities and also has been moving, due to this intensive cooperation, from what had been formal relationships toward casual contacts where ever more citizens and organizations are managing to link up. Nitra has direct contacts, based on official agreements, with the cities of Spišská Nová Ves (Slovakia), České Budějovice and Kroměříž (Czech Republic), Kielce and Zielona Góra (Poland), Zoetermeer (Netherlands), Báčsky Petrovec (Serbia), Osijek (Croatia), Eretria (Greece), Gosford (Australia), Naperville (USA) and Jinotéga (Nicaragua).

Not the least important among the roles NISYS plays is promoting Nitra as well as cultural and sporting activities through regular updates on the Nitra city website - www.nitra.sk and through placards and signs posted at certain places. NISYS guarantees complete publicizing of Nitra both at home and abroad with the issuing of promotional brochures about the city; by participating in exhibitions and tourist trade fairs inside and outside Slovakia; in print communication; by organizing press conferences to announce important city events; sending information to regional newspapers; regularly communicating with magazines that focus on tourism; preparing articles about the city when there is interest; through paid advertisements in the press; with a regular program “Tip na vikend” (Weekend Tips) broadcast on the N-Radio station and Zobor TV, both serving the region; by placing information on www.kultura.sk, www.VasCas.sk, www.obce.info and with Radio Twist and Slovak Radio, and by cooperating with the Slovak Tourism Agency and profession tourism associations both in Slovakia and abroad.

Further NISYS activities include working with the public and educating children and youth about the Region. In cooperation with Nitra City Hall, NISYS organizes cultural and sporting events, seminars and conferences in theaters with a 25-seat capacity and discussion groups for elementary school pupils under the title of “My City”. NISYS is also working with the Domino leisure time center on a regional “Know Your City” contest and is preparing lectures for universities on Nitra in the present age. There has been intensive cooperation with students at Nitra’s two universities who are studying tourism and writing their graduate theses. Such cooperation joins practical experience with the students’ knowledge to create a concrete tourism product.

NISYS’s work also includes editing NITRA, a cultural and community monthly magazine which maps on 32 pages the activities at Nitra City Hall and informs readers about events in Nitra itself.

Nitra Information System is a member of the Association of Information Centers in Slovakia (AICES), which guarantees high quality in services provided for the tourism sector.
